Can dependents be added throughout the plan year?
An employee can add dependents during a plan year if the employee has a qualified status change or a special enrollment event and the dependents were not previously enrolled during that plan year. Special Enrollment include marriage, divorce, birth, or adoption of a child, or a loss of coverage from another group plan. The change in coverage must be consistent with the family status change. For example, if an employee gets married, the coverage category can be changed from employee only coverage to employee plus spouse.
