Can Democracy and Capitalism ever be mutually compatible?

Yes, but not the American way. In America defense companies actually undermine democracy by lobby the US govt in to buying weaponry and services they don’t need. If the lobbying doesn’t work they might even fabricate a reason for war. This has happened in the past, by the way.

The problem is democracy is a little like communism – you see it on paper and think “my god, this is what is best!” and then you realise that “well it can be… but how do we implement it?” I would argue that in straight up laissez-faire (open market) capitalism it is impossible – the media, owned by the businesses, control a very large majority of the voters, and for example in the UK the Sun, the best selling paper, has in fact played key parts in the 1991 and 1997 elections for sure, due to deals done with its owner and the Government. If you have not a media that is neither controlled by shareowners, or the Government, then that is one thing out of the way. Perhaps a way when the Government penalises anyone that earns profit, and forces all media owners, i.e. self-employed rich people, to be on wages and not on the stock market, it may work. To be brutally honest, democracy is a perfect, like communism, that can not be realistically reached. It requires that everyone listens to all
