Can dead volcanoes erupt?
An extinct volcano is one which is no longer active and hasn’t erupted in historical times. It is possible for a volcano that humans THINK is extinct to erupt again. Of couse if it does then it means that our classification of that volcano as extinct would have been incorrect. The problem is that there are lots of volcanoes that have very long repose periods between eruptions. For humans these repose periods are long enough that we think that the volcano will never erupt again. Example of extinct volcano Kilimanjaro (Tanzania) Some volcanoes lie dormant for thousands of years before erupting again. Mauna Kea (Hawaii) is considered dormant, as is Mount Rainier (Washington State) Fourpeaked volcano in Alaska erupted in 2004 for the first time in 10,000 years. Geological records show volcanoes in Hawaii may be dormant for one million years before reactivating.
