Can curry really trigger labour?
Thank you for your question. The end of pregnancy is sometimes called ‘term’ and rather than being just one day (the due date), term is actually a period of time from 37 to 42 weeks gestation. This is the time frame that most women go into labour spontaneously. At 36 weeks, we would still consider your baby pre-term or premature, although the risk of problems is very small indeed. Some babies at 36 weeks need a short admission to the neonatal special or intensive care unit – usually for closer observation. I have also heard that spicy foods can bring on labour along with other suggestions such as sex and jogging up and down stairs (but not together!). I am not so sure that spicy foods are the answer. If that were the case, we might expect that the average delivery date or length of pregnancy would be shorter in India and other eastern countries, but I don’t believe that it is.
