Ph.D. students must be in residence at SAIS in Washington, DC during their first year of study, and all Ph.D. coursework must be completed in Washington, DC. Fieldwork begins after a student has completed all necessary courses, passed the comprehensive examinations, and successfully defended a dissertation prospectus.
