Household cockroaches are very unpopular guests for humans. Their favourite habitats are wherever it is moist and warm, for instance kitchens. At night they become active and start searching for food. In this way they transmit germs, putrefying bacteria and fungus spores. After house dust mites cockroaches are the commonest cause of allergies to arthropods. Studies in America have found that up to thirty per cent of the US population is allergic to cockroaches. Cockroaches that occur sporadically can be combated with bait traps (Bait Station). In large quantities the commercially available sprays are effective (e.g. Baygon Crawling Insect Spray). This acts quickly and reliably against the adult insects. Since already laid cockroach eggs cannot be eliminated, the treatment should be repeated after a few days. If the cockroaches only occur to a local and limited extent, it may be enough to apply a coating of the spray to these areas. When the second cockroach generation hatches and comes
