Can clary sage start off labour?
A. Clary sage oil should not be used in pregnancy by amateurs. As with most aromatherapy oils, there has been very little research into the effects and safety of clary sage. In the absence of supporting research, it is best to ‘play safe’. Although one of the properties of clary sage is to stimulate the onset of labour, it should only be used for this purpose if you have been specifically advised by a qualified aromatherapist, or a midwife skilled in the use of aromatherapy. Clary sage claims several other benefits of value to women in labour and afterwards, including augmenting (speeding up) labour, and the relief of labour pain and stress and anxiety. You may like to discuss its use for these purposes with a qualified aromatherapist.
