Can Christian symbols be used to celebrate holidays in public places?

Question I just heard that because of the “separation of church and state,” my city government will no longer use any “Christian” decorations on government property in celebration of various holidays. Can holidays like Christmas or even Independence Day be celebrated in the public square with Christian symbols? Answer Focus is aware that Christian symbols of various holidays such as Thanksgiving and Christmas have become controversial — especially when it comes to the types of decorations that are traditionally placed on government property. Though our ministry does not have a list of definitive guidelines for this type of event, the Dec. 1, 2005, Focus on the Family broadcast, with Alliance Defense Fund (ADF) president Alan Sears, discusses the legalities of Christian symbols and sayings at Christmastime. ADF has more than 950 allied attorneys available nationwide to help anyone who is faced with an improper attempt to censor celebrations of Chrismas in schools or on public property.
