Can cats suffer from hay fever?
Not absolutely sure. If it continues, certainly check with your vet. I will say though that my 8 month old mini dachshund was also suffering with hay fever type symptoms. We closed the windows and turned on the AC, now he is completely well. I really do think he was allergic to the pollen, so your cat could be also.
Yes, cats can suffer from allergies of many types, just as humans can. I had one who, like myself, was allergic to certain perfumes. Just like I did, he would wheeze and cough whenever we got a visit from a friend who used a certain perfume. So there is no reason why a cat couldn’t be allergic to certain grasses. The same cat who was allergic to perfume was fine with flowers, and he would often stop and smell the hyacinths, roses and peonies that grew in the garden and the expression on his face showed how much he enjoyed the fragrance they produced. Consult your vet for an eyewash for your cat. In the meantime you could try gently bathing his eyes with clear water. I’m not sure if there is yet a feline equivalent of loratidine (the main ingredient in most of the top anti-allergy drugs for humans.) Again, your vet would be able to tell you. I hope so, because it would be a shame to have to keep your cat indoors when he enjoys the garden so much. Good luck to you and your kitty.
Yes they can, one of my cats gets really watery eyes when she’s been playing out in the grass and both of my cats sneeze more often when there is high pollen count! The best way to treat it is (unfortunately) to keep the cat away from whatever causes their allergy, if it is troublesome to them, the vet can help and can provide treatment, sometimes this includes antihistamines but usually they are not enough to cure the problem in cats and dogs.
