Can Cartoon Vocabulary BOOST Retention of Vocabulary Terms?

8:30 – 10:30 a.m. Room 217 Alicia Finley Could your vocab lessons use a chuckle? Cartoons can make that happen! Participants will be introduced to a strategy used during an action research project that combined the use of cartoons and personal connections to improve vocabulary knowledge and retention for a group of learning disabled students. The presentation will focus on supportive theories and researchers such as Graves, Marzano, McKeown, and McVicker to support the strategy benefits. Data from the action research will be shared to demonstrate the uniqueness of this strategy and its effectiveness especially with special needs students. Hands-on activities include reviewing resources and making our own vocabulary cartoons for select words. Participants will be able to work in small groups and create their own vocabulary cartoon lesson based on their curriculum needs.
