Just days after setting their clocks back an hour to conserve daylight, Americans again turned to the eternal ticking of their timepieces with disbelief and discombobulation. The time approached 4 AM, and all eyes turned to Ohio to see who would lead the country for the next four years. President Bush stood as the proud holder of a slim but seemingly insurmountable 2-point margin in the state, but Senator Kerry’s camp was unwilling to concede defeat. Instead, Kerry’s top campaign adviser, Mary Beth Cahill, released a statement that Kerry believed Ohio would belong to him after the tallying of the numerous provisional and absentee ballots. The President’s aptly named “war room” put pressure on the Kerry campaign by announcing that Bush would make a victory speech even without a Kerry concession.
