Can birds keep getting scaley mites?
Scalyface mites DO NOT live off the host….in other words they dont live other than on the bird….the mites that have been mentioned and the cleaning of cages for mites applies to red mites NOT scalyface mites. http://www.exoticpetvet.net/avian/mites.… http://www.birds-online.de/gesundheit/ge… As to your question as to why the bird has scalyface mites again……….low immune system is responsible for repeat mite infestations. The birds immune system is very low, due to either, health, diet or stress factors. Low immune system means they get everything going. Scalyface mites transfer by direct beak to beak contact with an infected bird. They can also be in the system and appear when the bird is at a low ebb. And never buy or use mite protectors sold for cages they are harmful to birds.
