CAN BANANA TREES BE GROWN FOR FRUIT IN A GREENHOUSE?
Answer Jeremy, you can grow them in a greenhouse, but only if you can duplicate the conditions required to bear fruit; those are high humidity and a rain forest type of condition. Bananas like it hot and wet, with copious amounts of nutrients and irrigation. I would recommend Raja Puri as a candidate for your attempt; it only grows to about 7 feet and is somewhat forgiving when it comes to cold stress. The only other problem you may run into is finding a container big enough to contain the corm (rhizome). There are dwarf varieties out there, but the term dwarf with bananas is somewhat of a misnomer; they still get to be about 7-10 feet tall. There is a variety called “super dwarf cavandish” which they claim will only grow to about 4 feet, but from what I have heard, its not the easiest to grow and can be very susceptible to cold stress and disease not to mention its fruit bearing ability is said to be somewhat wanting also.
