Can ATSDR account for the years without air monitors?
ATSDR reviewed all incident reports for the PORTS facility, and found no reports of air releases that could adversely affect the health of off-site residents. • There was reportedly an off-site well for which an elevated technetium count was found to be a “typographical error”. Residents report that when EPA tried to re-test the well, it (the technetium) was gone. Since ATSDR is not the first agency to find a typographical error, some residents are suspicious of the 1986 hydrogen fluoride error reported in ATSDR’s health consultation. The well referred to showed a false hit for technetium. When the water sample was retested, technetium was not detected. The first test of the water sample showed technetium just at the lower limit of detection, and was most likely detecting natural radon. • Residents commented that ATSDR should have looked at 1958 – 1988 instead of only 1986 to evaluate hydrogen fluoride in the health consultation.
