The final outcomes of recent transitions cannot yet be known, but it is now clear that nations emerging from dictatorship face formidable challenges as they seek to establish or restore the rule of law. This is the case that Zimbabwe is seized with and needs to address in order to return the country to democratic legitimacy after almost three decades of a Stalinist-type dictatorship.
