Can apple trees be started from a twig using root grow?
I have lived and worked in orchards most of my life. You can not root an apple tree from a cutting except in Laboratory Conditions that require equipment and techniques beyond your home abilities. i.e. Culture Propagation under completely sterilized conditions. You can graft whips about 18 inches long onto any remaining live roots (stump would work better) you have. Sharpen the base of the whip by cutting off of each side so it looks like thin wedge. Cut a notch into the root with a hatchet or very sharp knife. The notch should technically be a split in the root or stump, Not something removed from the root or stump. Be careful not to damage the root or stump too much. Insert the sharpened flat end of your whip into the notch. It should made good tight contact with the wood on either side of the notch. Melt candle was around the whip and notch to keep out invading molds and diseases. Cut the whip off to 12 inches ( making sure you leave plenty of buds) to put out new limbs. Wax the tip
