Can anyone walk me through getting my first photography job?
I would start by creating a strong portfolio. You don’t specify what type of photography you’re most interested in; therefore, I’d say create a varied but balanced portfolio. Start with your second best shot, end with your very best shot, and keep it to about 12-20. I’d then recommend approaching local photographers and inquiring about an internship. One of the best ways to learn is to watch and be taught by an expert. You may find yourself doing weddings, senior pictures, portraits, or even baby pictures. Every experience is a learning experience. Lastly, I would read every photography book I could get my hands on. Take a day and hang out at your local library or bookstore. Constantly educate yourself. When you go for your interviews, you should stress that you are willing to learn the craft. This means doing the grunt work–setting up lights, umbrellas, reflectors, backgrounds….all of it. Be sure to present yourself as teachable, and willing to learn, and you will make a good impre
