Diana is a young girl (probably around seventeen) living in Florence. The French army is in town, and she has been courted by the handsome young officer Bertram (probably mid-twenties). Diana almost certainly likes Bertram a lot. Diana then finds out that Bertram is married, and that his wife – Helena – is traveling in disguise, and lodging with her mother. If this wasn’t bad enough, Helena wants Diana to agree to sleep with Bertram, but then pull a switch, so that Helena ends up in Bertram’s bed instead of Diana. Diana agrees (Helena has offered her mother a lot of money), but sounds like she is horrified at just how dishonest and unreliable grown ups are. (Bertram was trying to get her into bed, even though he is already married. Helena is trying to use her to trick Bertram. Her own mother says this is all OK). ….
