Diana is a young girl (probably around seventeen) living in Florence. The French army is in town, and she has been courted by the handsome young officer Bertram (probably mid-twenties). Diana almost certainly likes Bertram a lot. Diana then finds out that Bertram is married, and that his wife – Helena – is traveling in disguise, and lodging with her mother. If this wasn’t bad enough, Helena wants Diana to agree to sleep with Bertram, but then pull a switch, so that Helena ends up in Bertram’s bed instead of Diana. Diana agrees (Helena has offered her mother a lot of money), but sounds like she is horrified at just how dishonest and unreliable grown ups are.
