Can anyone think of an example to illustrate kavanaghs definition of political culture?
I’m not surprised you’re stuck, and I suspect many politicians would be. Probably the easiest way is to consider a particular political culture and start from there. So if you think about the kind of democracy we operate in the UK, for instance, we define that as a parliamentary democracy. Our political culture is rooted in universal suffrage – the right of all adults to elect someone to represent their interests in the legislature. We value freedom of religious worship; racial equality ; a basic structure of human rights; the right to express oneself; the right to demonstrate or protest; the right to a certain amount of privacy; etc. You could go on for hours working out what the values are which underpin our particular democratic system – it’s much easier just to say “our political culture”.
