As well as the suggestions above, you could go to your local wool shop and explain what you’re doing, and ask if they could put a poster up for you explaining what you’re doing and that you would love donations of wool. They might even allow you to leave a collecting bag in. That way, people who have finished one project and are in getting wool for their next thing can drop off the leftovers from the last one. Might not get you loads of wool, but it would be something for people to maybe practice on. You could also ask for old wool garments, like sweaters etc to be dropped off.

Free yarn (not wool) is going to be much harder to find. You can find some lower priced items at thrift shops, but usually not enough of one colour for a large project. If you are making small items, or using multiple colours, that is an excellent place. You can look on Freecylce, and on Craigslist. Check garage sales, too. If the person would like to donate it to your group rather than having it for sale, just ask them. They may be willing to donate whatever is left at the end of the day. Ask in your neighbourhood. Put up notices at the community centre, library, grocery store, church, anywhere people gather. Ask for any donations of unneeded yarns… lots of people have odds and ends, and don’t know what to do with them. You would be surprised what you can get even if it was just one ball from everyone on your street!
