Can anyone tell me what happened to Vietnams economy after the Vietnam War?
Vietnam’s economy bit the dust after the end of the Vietnam War, and Vietnam became the third poorest country in the world by 1985. Communism and a sense of revenge on those living in South Vietnam destroyed the economic infrastructure developed from the 20 years of South Vietnam being a market economy. Vietnam as a whole may have had a chance to build their economy to sustain itself if their communist leaders at the time weren’t so ignorant. Those living in North Vietnam had lived under communist control since 1955. They didn’t know they were poor, and were less affected than those in South Vietnam. On the other hand, those in South Vietnam knew they were poor and also knew they were being punished by the communists. This issue is apparent between North and South Vietnam even today. Vietnam became completely reliant on economic aid from the Soviet Union, who was also poor. Adding fuel to the fire was Vietnam’s invasion of Cambodia and controlling it for a few years.
