My two favorite genres for background music are classical and house. I love classical piano like Bach and Mozart. Particularly Bach, his compositions are from the Baroque period of classical music. Look for his concertos or inventions. This is especially good music for studying, as countless research as been done showing that the highly intricate and interlaced melodies stimulate new neural pathways in the brain of the listener (the reason a lot of pregnant women play music to their developing fetuses). This increase of brain activity greatly improves recall of what you’re studying. At the other end of the spectrum, but for similar reasons, I love house. Not the clubby type, but the deeper more “intelligent” sounds of groups like Underworld (their album –dubnobasewithmyheadman– is one of my all-time favorites) and Boards Of Canada.
