The peony was an Imperial floral motif. The Emperor Yang (605-617 AD), restricted peony cultivation to imperial gardens and allocated different flower colors to favored officials according to rank. Peonies were cultivated in their thousands in the Imperial gardens of China and Japan with the tree peony called the ‘King of Flowers’.
