Depending on the variety of shrub, and when you plant it, it should begin new growth within the first year. If you plant it in the fall after it has gone dormant, it should kick out in the spring and grow throughout the growing season. The warmth of the soil should promote some early root growth and help establish the plant. If planted in the early spring, it should begin shortly thereafter. Not all will flower the first year though, but some may, depending on the particular species. Some types of plants flower on 2 year old wood. If you haven’t seen any new growth by late spring/early summer after planting it, it probably didn’t make it.
