Russia was under control of the Mongol Tartars (who by this time had adopted Islam) until 1480.Their rulers were thus puppets or client kings,who had to pay an annual tribute to the Tartars in order to remain in power. The Renaissance didn’t really effect Russia, which remained in a state of semi-barbaric feudalism almost until the time of Peter the Great,in the late 17th century.For example, major Russian buildings and fortifications were still being consructed in wood during the European Renaissance, and still didn’t reach anything like the size or sophistication of Western European,Byzantine,or Muslim constructions.
