Can anyone tell me about what Russia was like while the renaissance was happening (1300-1500)?
Russia was under control of the Mongol Tartars (who by this time had adopted Islam) until 1480.Their rulers were thus puppets or client kings,who had to pay an annual tribute to the Tartars in order to remain in power. The Renaissance didn’t really effect Russia, which remained in a state of semi-barbaric feudalism almost until the time of Peter the Great,in the late 17th century.For example, major Russian buildings and fortifications were still being consructed in wood during the European Renaissance, and still didn’t reach anything like the size or sophistication of Western European,Byzantine,or Muslim constructions. The Tartars still controlled much of Russia outside of the Principality of Muscovy until the rule of Peter The Great; Cossacks controlled much of the modern Ukraine,and the Baltic coastline was controlled by Lithuania, Sweden, and the Prussian Teutonic Knights for much of this period.Southern Russia and the Caucasus region was largely under control,direct or through clie
