Can anyone tell me about the Gothic cathedrals in Vienna?
The city of Vienna contains 450+ churches ranging from medieval to modern. Many of the old churches have undergone modifications over the centuries so they contain an interesting mix of styles. The most famous Gothic church in Vienna is of course the Stephansdom cathedral. It has an absolutely beautiful coloured tiled roof. Its 450 foot Steffl spire can be seen from kilometres away. Some of the royal Habsburg family are buried in a vault beneath the main altar. Vienna’s oldest church is the Ruprechtskirche church from the 11th century. St Ruprecht is the patron saint of Vienna’s salt merchants of long ago. Other Gothic churches include the Maria am Gestade, the Deutschordenskirche, the Michaelerkirche, the Augustinerkirche, the Minoritenkirche and the Burgkapelle. Other styles of churches you will find in Vienna are baroque, neo-classical, renaissance and modern.
