Tunisian Dialect is different from the MSA (modern Standard Arabic) you hear in most of the gulf countries, as you probably know. The language is mixed with words derived from various languages, including French, Spanish, Turkish, Berber, Italian, etc. Tunisians all learn French starting in the 3rd grade, so if you know French, you will get along wonderfully here as well. In fact, French is the second language of Tunisia and is actually used so much that in everyday speaking we mix French and Arabic in our speaking. I will give you a few key phrases and words in Arabic, and French: DO YOU SPEAK ENGLISH = Kelim bil Anglais / Parlez-vous anglais HELLO = Asala’ama / Bonjour GOODBYE = Bisla’ama / Au revoir GOOD MORNING = Sabah El Kheir / Bonjour GOOD NIGHT = Tis’Sabah El Kheir / Bonne nuit PLEASE = Birabbee minfadlik / S’il vous plaît THANK YOU = Ya’ Ishik -OR- Shukran / Merci HOW ARE YOU = Ashnooa ahwalik / Comment êtes-vous FINE, THANKS = Labes elhamdulillah / Bien, merci WHAT’S YOUR NAM
