Can anyone summarize the evolution of Christianity throughout history for me?
Some time long after Jesus supposedly lived, stories that bore suspicious resemblance to Egyptian and Buddhist myths gained popularity. But there were tons of splinter sects, so in the 4th century Constantine called a bunch of bishops together and they decided which stories to keep and which ones to burn, then promptly went house to house and burned the ones they did not like, and Christianity was soon declared the official state religion of Rome. The Gnostics were not happy about this, but at least part of their name was later used to describe people who were not too sure about the whole “god” thing. Rome fell, though it lived on in the east, and that’s a long story, but it’s the way we end up with Eastern Orthodox Catholicism. Anyway, post Rome, the formerly Roman Empire becomes known as Christendom and breaks into countries that are more or less recognizable on a modern map of Europe. Christianity eventually spreads, though without the cohesive empire around it, it travels more slow
