Can anyone summarize the chapter Alma in the Book of Mormon and its importance in the Book of Mormon, please?
The book of Alma in the Book of Mormon has several chapters. A few that stand out include Alma chapter five where the reader is harrassed with guilt-invoking questions like, are you humble enough? Have you kept the commandments enough? They’re perfectly aligned with the Mormon philosphy of works to try to please God, the fruit of which is doubt as to your standing before God. Not what Paul had in mind if you’ve read Romans or Ephesians. Alma 32 is another gem, especially if you’ve read the coercive influence literature. There the concept of desiring to believe is equated with a seed. It needs to be watered, nurtured, etc… The problem is, when someone wants to believe something, research shows that they eventually find evidence to support the belief. A person who desires to believe is easy prey to social proof, the idea that if enough people say it’s true, and you want to believe it’s true, you eventually feel that it is true.
