Car hire suddenly got more expensive last year when the pound crashed against the dollar. You used to be able to get a basic car for about £89 a week but this has now gone up to about £120. When the exchange rate improved a bit they didn’t drop their prices (now where have I heard that before …) Plus car hire firms worldwide a feeling the pinch so they have put their prices up. Check out some car trawler websites like Auto Europe or carrentals. If there are only 2 of you (or you plus 2 small kids) you really only need to book the basic economy car. You won’t get a car as small as they say you will – the smallest will be like a Hyundai Accent size and you can easily fit 2 cases in the boot. That should keep the cost down a bit.
