Can anyone recommend some good SOLO-PIANO music?
For solo piano I would recommend Ravel’s Ondine from Gaspard De La Nuit. But since you said it doesn’t have to be piano… The most subtle, ominous, ghostly, and faint music I’ve ever heard is within the Adagio (2nd) movement of Bartok’s Piano Concerto No. 2. Of course, it ultimately gets interrupted by tympani and piano, but it does come back. It’s a bit more obscure, but David Chesky’s Psalm III fits the bill as well, though it does build up to something less subtle over time. Unfortunately I can’t think of anything specific that stays consistently the way you describe, but Gorecki and Arvo Pärt are composers worth checking out, who I know can pull that sort of thing off very well.
