But think to the future…if you stay with this, you might find that at some point you would want to go with a commercial program (more features and works better/faster with larger datasets). So whatever software you go with, make sure it has the capability to export your information to a GEDCOM file (critically important if it is an online program). All genealogy software are really database programs. And they all have their own unique database structures and formats. So the only way to move information from one program to another is through a common format – and today, the MOST common is GEDCOM format. All commercial software that I’ve seen can import GEDCOM files. And periodically, you should dump your data to a GEDCOM format – AND store a copy on CD/DVD or another computer or 2.
