Can anyone recommend novels for middle school?
Believe me, your problem is not yours alone. Very few middle to low ability students seem to be able to stay attentive or interested for the full length of a novel these days. Even short novels aimed at the majority of the students (be it social class or racial make-up) seem to fail at holding their interest. Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry may seem like a good choice, but many students will find it old-fashioned. The Cay may also fall into this category. Another that seemed like a good bet for an inner-city school, Rosa Guy’s The Friends, also met with mixed results. For the most part, I have always found that The Outsiders is met with a generally positive response, whether in middle or high school. The Giver, with its sci-fi-ish approach, may be a good bet for some classes. Advanced placement classes are probably more receptive to a wider variety of suggestions.
