I stencil a lot and what I use is regular acrylic paint (just regular paint, but make sure it’s acrylic) mixed with a textile medium (usually found around the fabric paint/t-shirts, or even sometimes the regular paint. Ask about it!) You have to wash the garment once before it looks nice (before you wash it, it feels hard but after you wash it once or twice it’s fine). When buying the acrylic paint, one tip I have is to not buy the cheapest kind. Go for Americana brand or Folk Art brand. I know Michaels has some cheap, 50 cent acrylic paint that doesn’t work well. You can buy nicer acrylic paint for about one dollar for a small bottle, which actually ends up being a lot of paint. I’ve gone through a ton of stenciling projects with those smaller bottles. The textile medium runs from 2 – 4 dollars, depending on how much is in the bottle, but you only use a little bit of it at a time. Read the instructions on the textile before you use it.
