If you intend to pursue a career in graphic design, you really need to get your hands on Adobe Creative Suite (Version 4 is the most current) Adobe CS is made up a number of separate programs i.e. Indesign, PhotoShop, Illustrator, Acrobat, Dreamweaver and Flash to name the most common. InDesign is a page layout program for creating brochures, magazines etc. PhotoShop is an image editing software, Illustrator is a vector based drawing program for creating logos etc. Acrobat is commonly used for file distribution i.e. for proofing purposes to clients or for sending finished artwork to a printer for printing.
