I’ve watched both formats on my monitor without any problems, and because of the way computer monitors work this is going to be true of all of them. Some are better choices than others, and I’d recommend getting a widescreen LCD monitor at this point so that widescreen content will fill the entire screen. You could use a VGA to SCART connector, but many monitors have DVI inputs (in which case an HDMI to DVI adapter would be necessary) and many also have composite and component connectors.
