Helen, Whatever you do, don’t go to just one broker for your information. Shop around and use the internet. I like Karen Mulreed of Westport Mortgage, Iliad Estrada-Horty with Weichert Realtors, and some of the local banks are offering reasonable quotes. If you have a down payment and an established credit, you should find great rates right now. You may also want to check into FHA if you are a first time home buyer (or haven’t owned a home in three years). They require only 3 1/2 percent down.
