A hybrid helps make a full-sized car more efficient, but if you don’t need a big car you can make do with a much smaller car. That’ll give you high mileage without the expense of a hybrid engine. Honda used to make a small hybrid car called the Insight, which got fantastic mileage (70+ MPG), but they don’t make it any more. Look into the Toyota Yaris and the Scion xA. Both are Toyotas, and get mileage in the upper 30s. Also look at the Honda Civic and the Honda Fit. They’re slightly larger and get slightly less mileage, but they’re still mid-to-upper 30s. I drive the Fit and am very happy with it. Both Toyotas and Hondas are extremely reliable.
