There is overlap between religion and superstition but only a fool would believe them to be the same. Religion is a set of beliefs that is intended to explain and give meaning to our existence and the existence of the universe. That is not garden variety superstition. The idea that bad luck comes from opening an umbrella indoors is not religion in itself, but a superstition. It has nothing to do with our existence or the meaning of our lives. It certainly could be the belief of a religious group but it is just superstition. So superstition can be religious but it doesn’t have to be. Atheists may regard all religion as superstition but I disagree. My religion is not baseless and there is reason and knowledge. I don’t believe in God for no reason. My evaluation of the evidence given by our universe leads me to believe in God. There is reason and knowledge behind my belief so I don’t think it is superstition. Supernatural yes, superstition no.
