The half-life of caffeine in the body is less than 12 hours in healthy adults. This means that in less than twelve hours (often as little as 3 or 4), your body has already metabolized half the caffeine in your system. If you drink caffeine right before bed, and get 8 hours of sleep, you’ll have about 1/4 the level of caffeine in your system when you wake up. In other words, you’re most of the way toward quitting each morning when you wake up! Caffeine isn’t an addictive substance. Your body can build a tolerance to it, and you can experience headaches if you quit cold turkey, but it isn’t as though you need to be hospitalized. Just lower your daily consumption and take a headache pill if you need to (make sure it doesn’t have caffeine in the ingredients). If you drink 6 cups of coffee a day normally, drink 5 cups and one glass of water one day. Then 4 cups of coffee and 2 glasses of water the next day, and so on.
