Can anyone please explain me about SCR application for Electronic Ballast?

An SCR is a diode that does not turn on in the forward direction until it gets a voltage on its extra line. This allows the conduction to start later in the cycle. I really don’t know much about electronic ballast, but I am guessing that the SCR allows a sudden change in the current in a coil, this leads to a high voltage spike.
