Yes, you need a windows live account. Once you try to set up Xbox Live, it will ask you for you Windows Live ID. If you don’t have one, you can simply create one on your Xbox. You do need the gold membership to play games online. Microsoft has two types of membership. The silver and the gold membership. The silver membership, I believe, comes with most systems and is free. You can shop at Xbox Live Marketplace, text and voice chat, build your friends list and view other Gamer Profiles. However, with the gold membership, you can participate in multiplayer games and tournaments, customize your gamer zone, text and voice chat in game, special bonus perks like free downloads, demos etc.
