“The Story of Art” by E.H. Gombrich. Used copies are currently selling from $10.99 per copy. I studied this book for about a year and I think it is a very comprehensive guide to the world of culture that includes everything from cave art to modern day abstracts. The edition that I studied is the 14th edition with over 400 illustrations and 200 in color. On Amazon it has a 5 star rating. This book was used to teach art history at the Loyola Academy for boys in the Chicago area. I have read or browsed through many art books, but this one really held my attention from cover to cover. It is not an ordinary text book with questions for the kids to answer at the end of each chapter. If you are a teacher, you will have to make up your own questions to quiz the students.
