Can anyone give me some interesting facts about fertilisers?
Have been used for bomb making, including many Irish terrorist groups and Al Quaida (unsure of spelling). Use is responsible for contaminated drinking water and underground water aquifers. Usage of artificial fertilisers helps deplete the soil of natural organic matter, if organic matter, such as horse manure (used as a standard natural fertiliser in bygone days – still used in a minority of farms) is not added to the soil. Soil erosion occurs more easily on soil without organic matter added to, hence bigger dust storms etc. Production of artificial fertilisers takes enormous amounts of energy, and helps contribute to CO2 emissions and global warming. Gardeners often make compost ‘teas’ to use as a liquid fertiliser – a drench made from steeping compost in water, diluting it, with high levels of plant nutrients.
