Can anyone give me advice on my almond tree problem?
The cultivation of almond trees is similar to that of peaches. They require a subtropical climate that is nearly frost free, similar to that of their native Mediterranean region. It may just be too cold for almonds in you area. Two other things that I know that can cause premature nut drop in Almond trees is drought stress and Alternaria Leaf Spot. Alternaria Leaf Spot, as the name implies, results in spots on the leaves, premature leaf drop and nut drop. Since you did not mention leaf drop or spots, I have to assume that it is not Alternaria Leaf Spot. So, look at your watering practices. Is this tree under drought during the critical fruit set period? During fruit development? Try supplemental watering. Final note: a Boron deficiency may also cause premature nut drop. Have your soil tested for Boron. Boron is a trace mineral and excessive amounts in the soil is toxic to plants. With a soil test you can determine if this is an issue and how much you need to safely add.
