Can anyone give me 5 relevant points about coccus bacteria?
1) A bacterium with the coccus shape is spherical or nearly spherical in shape. 2) Arrangements: diplococci occur in pairs, groups of four or eight are known as tetrads, bead-like chains are called streptococci, and grapelike clusters are known as staphlococci. 3) Many members of the coccus family are known human pathogens (ie: Staphylococcus aureus- skin infections; Streptococcus pyogenes- childbed fever; etc) 4) Coccus bacterium can be either Gram positive or Gram negative (ie: Stahylococcus epidermidis is Gram positive while Neisseria gonorrhoeae is Gram negative) 5) MRSA (methicillin resistant S. aureus) and VRSE (vancomycin resistant enterococcus) are among the leading nosocomial (hospital acquired) infections in industrialized countries.
