May 24 2007 Evening Gazette There are hundreds of out of work skilled men on Teesside who are perfectly capable of safely dismantling these vessels and safely removing any toxic materials in them. This area needs as much work as it can get and could become a world centre for the safe scrapping of any vessel. Like many thousands of steel workers, I have worked with asbestos and I agree it is very dangerous but, with today’s health and safety practices, can be handled and stored safely. Are Hartlepool’s councillors frightened when the words toxic or asbestos are mentioned? Have they any experience on up-to-date procedures of working with toxic waste? Why not let these ships be scrapped under strict conditions and regular monitoring. At least in this country they will be safely scrapped, not like in any Third World country where they might end up.
