Can anyone direct me towards a DVD recorder that ignores copy protection for personal backup purposes?

Good luck finding one. Most dvd recorders are not designed to copy protected dvds. There is, however, software that allows you to by-pass copy protection for personal backups. Look over the selection at Slysoft.com.

Another option would be to buy a DVD player that is region free without Macrovision (that is the built in copy protection that is annoying). This way you play the DVD and the DVD recorder that it is connected to will read it as normal and your problem is solved. This even breaks the protection on WDisney recordings according to a friend of mine.
