Can anybody describe what it is like at the source, middle and mouth of a river please..?
The source is usually high in the hills. It starts off as a small trickle, then gets bigger as it goes downhill. The mouth of a river is at the sea or ocean. The upper course of a river has a very narrow river valley with steep sides. This is because there is a lack of lateral erosion (erosion moving from side to side). The river is also very narrow as it has only just come from the source. There are interlocking spurs (which are hills sort of “plaiting” around each other.) The middle course of a river is always wider than the upper course of a river. This is because more tributaries (little streams that join onto a main river) joining on to it. It also flows quicker than the upper course of the river because there is more water which means more energy. The river valley will also be wider and there will be the beginnings of a meander. The lower course of a valley has a very very wide river. The river valley is also extremely wide. Often you cannot see the sides of it. The valley is cal
