Never would be nice but it’s impossible. The simple answer is to do what’s called a TDS test. That’s Total Dissolved Solids. What is put into water doesn’t leave unless it’s drained through backwash or an intentional drain. Chemicals stay in, water evaporates. Eventually there are a lot of solids dissolved in that water in the pool. That can change how your chemistry reacts to you trying to change it in your favour. How often you need to change the water depends mostly on that. Someone who lives in an area that never dumps to winterize will have a higher TDS than some who doesn’t.
